Founded by James F. Lessenberry, an animal behaviorist, Animal Learning Systems is built on a solid academic foundation of biologic and environmental influences on behavior. He has been helping families and their pets for more than 30 years.
Animal Learning Systems’ mission is to help families achieve a human–companion animal bond experience that is rich with purpose and value, by providing practical, humane, and affordable solutions for companion dog training, enhancing the psychological well-being of companion dogs and their living environments, and providing behavior therapy for challenging companion animals of all species.

About Us
We didn’t come to animal behavior and training as a hobby or a vocation learned through on-the-job training. And, we are not a franchise. Our dedicated professional staff are well educated and degreed people who apply the sciences of psychology and biology, learning and motivation, behavioral physiology, genetics, and behavioral pharmacology to the intersection of companion animals and our modern lifestyles.
Ours is a holistic approach, integrating the needs of people and their animals, the capacities of both, environmental constraints, and bio-medical considerations.
We don’t tell you how to live with your pet… we give you the ability to enjoy a companion that lives acceptably with you.

Animal Learning Systems was recommended to me by my Vet after my Aussiedoodle, Raiden, started showing signs of aggression. Jim came to my house to evaluate her and recommend that she be taken to the ALS facility for 6 to 8 week training. I was very reluctant, Raiden had already gone to another local trainer and we did not see any improvement in her. In the end, we decided to send Raiden to ALS. It was the best investment we have made for our furry friend! Evan was an amazing trainer, first training her then our family.
We no longer have the constant barking at anything that goes by our house, she walks with us through the neighborhood without a leash - ignoring people, dogs or squirrels that may go by. There has not been any more signs of aggression.
This year with Raiden has been so enjoyable. People comment on what a good dog she is and I always tell them about Animal Learning Systems.
Our dog Charlie was a rescue and had many behavioral issues. We went to a couple of other reputable trainers in our area and their approach was basic and didn't address the really deeply rooted problems she had. Jim came to our home and did a thorough evaluation of her and came up with a game plan. He took Charlie for several weeks to work with her one on one. He got down to the root of her issues and corrected them as well as built her up. When he met with us during the process to teach us how to work with and handle her, it was incredible. When he ultimately transferred her and the training back to us we were able to walk her through a very busy and dog filled area and we had complete control and Charlie had a new sense of confidence. We can't say enough great things about him and his organization. Also, he has top notch facilities and staff. We board with ALS when we have to go out of town and they take great care of her. They will work with her and make sure she is well taken care of. You cannot go wrong with Animal Learning Systems.
ALS transformed our aggressive puppy. She went from being afraid of the world and lashing out, to being a happy, energetic dog. Years later, she was cautious around our baby, and now has accepted him as a part of our family!
Our dog, June, did the in-house training program with ALS for 10 weeks. She is now a week out and is doing things that she would never have been able to do before - go off leash at the park, be comfortable around people she previously would have lashed out at and walk by another dog without reacting. As a result, we can see that she is a happier pup! This program is SO worth it. Not to mention, we are just so impressed by how thorough, responsive and caring the ALS team is. Thank you!
